How Illinois Became a Leader: Anita Alvarez Addresses Sex Trafficking

At a recent panel event with the American Bar Association’s International Human Rights group, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez described the evolution of how Illinois has become a leader in addressing the issue of sex trafficking. She discusses how addressing demand--going after pimps, johns and traffickers--is a relatively new and increasingly successful approach for law enforcement. End Demand Illinois partnered with Alvarez and her office in 2010 to pass the Illinois Safe Children Act, which ends the practice of prosecuting minors in prostitution.

Also on the panel were Maria Woltjen of the Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights at the University of Chicago, Lynne Johnson of CAASE, Rachel Durchslag of CAASE, Tianne Bataille of Metropolitan Family Services and Jennifer Greene of the Cook County State's Attorney's Office.
